19 FESTIVE THINGS TO DO IN VIENNA AT CHRISTMAS
🇦🇹
VISIT VIENNA’S MOST ICONIC CHRISTMAS MARKET AT THE RATHAUS
The Rathausplatz Christmas market is located in front of City Hall and is hands down the most famous Christmas market in Vienna and it should be on the top of your list of places to go in Vienna at Christmas.
Once you step into this festive wonderland, you’ll be greeted by the sights and sounds of Christmas: twinkling lights, cozy wooden stalls, and the delightful aroma of mulled wine and roasted chestnuts filling the air.
It features over 150 stalls every year, with local vendors selling everything from hand-carved ornaments and cozy scarves to local Viennese treats like Lebkuchen (gingerbread) and Punsch (a warm, spiced punch). Many of the stalls feature unique, handcrafted goods, making it the ideal spot to pick up holiday gifts and souvenirs you won’t find anywhere else.
Across the street in Rathaus Park, the trees are brought to life with glittering lights, a nativity trail, and a Ferris wheel. It’s a real winter wonderland!
I recommend avoiding weekends if possible, as it can get quite crowded. But if you do end up visiting on a weekend try not to let the crowds bother you - the market really does capture the magic of Vienna at Christmas, which will give you an truely unforgettable holiday experience.
ICE SKATE AT RATHAUSPLATZ
Rathausplatz transforms into a skating wonderland in the winter, and it's one of my favourite things to do in Vienna at Christmas! The Wiener Eistraum ice rink sprawls out with winding paths that weave through the trees, sparkling with holiday lights that make it feel like you’re skating through a magical storybook.
Even if you’re not exactly a pro skater (trust me, I’m far from it!), the experience is still a blast. Half the fun is in the wobbles and the occasional stumble - just part of the charm!
If you can, go at sunset. As the sky darkens, the lights start to twinkle, and the entire place takes on this cozy, enchanting glow. Skating at dusk is something special - you feel wrapped up in Vienna’s holiday spirit, gliding under the stars.
Skates are available for rent right there, so no need to worry if you haven’t packed your own. Plus, there’s always Punsch (hot spiced punch) waiting to warm you up afterward! It’s the perfect way to finish a chilly, laughter-filled evening on the ice.
TAKE A HORSE DRAWN CARRIAGE RIDE THROUGH THE CITY
Taking a horse-drawn carriage ride through Vienna’s city center is, without a doubt, one of the most magical things you can do here at Christmas. Sure, these carriage rides - called Fiaker - are available all year round, but there’s something extra special about them during the holiday season. The city is aglow with Christmas lights, and if you’re lucky enough to catch a bit of snowfall, it feels like you’ve stepped straight into a winter fairy tale.
You’ll find these elegant carriages lined up in front of iconic spots like the Hofburg Palace and St. Stephen’s Cathedral, making it easy to start your ride from some of Vienna’s most beautiful landmarks.
They offer two main options for the ride: a shorter 20-minute loop for about €60 or a longer 40-minute ride for around €105. I’ll admit, it’s a bit of a splurge, but in my experience, it’s absolutely worth it - especially if you’re looking to soak up Vienna’s holiday charm in a unique way.
ADMIRE THE HOLIDAY LIGHTS ON GRABEN AND KARNTNER STRASSE
If you’re looking for holiday lights that really dazzle, head straight to Graben and Kärntner Strasse - these streets are where Vienna pulls out all the stops for Christmas!
Graben, in particular, is known for its incredible giant chandeliers that hover above the street, creating a scene that feels straight out of a holiday movie. Each chandelier sparkles with hundreds of lights, illuminating the bustling street below and casting a soft glow over the historic buildings. It’s honestly breathtaking, and even after seeing it a few times, the magic never fades.
One of my favourite things to do here is to grab a steaming cup of Glühwein or hot chocolate from a nearby stall, wrap my hands around the cup for warmth, and stroll leisurely under the chandeliers.
And don’t forget your camera (or your phone) because this area is a photographer’s dream. The chandeliers against Vienna’s elegant architecture make for some stunning holiday photos that you’ll want to keep forever.
TOP TIP : Visiting around dusk when the lights first come on. The fading daylight mixed with the glow of the chandeliers creates a magical atmosphere that’s hard to beat.
ATTEND A TRADITIONAL CHRISTMAS CONCERT
Vienna is known as the ‘city of music’ so attending a classical music concert is definitely one of the best things to do in Vienna during Christmas.
There are several places around the city that host these incredible musical delights including St Stephen’s Cathedral and Mozarthaus.
If you want to go to one of the popular concerts you will have to book your tickets well inadvance as they tend to sell out really quickly during the holiday season.
If you’re a fan of classical music or just want to experience something uniquely Viennese, this is a must.
Here are some of the most popular and beloved concerts
VISIT THE VIENNA STATE OPERA FOR CHRISTMAS PERFORMANCES
Seeing a holiday performance at Vienna’s State Opera is an experience you’ll never forget. The opera house itself is incredible with ornate chandeliers, red velvet seats, and golden balconies that look like something out of a fairy tale.
During the holiday season, it becomes even more enchanting, especially if you’re lucky enough to catch a performance of The Nutcracker. There’s just something about watching this classic ballet in such a grand setting that feels like pure magic!
Make sure you grab your tickets as soon as you can, because these holiday shows sell out fast. And don’t be shy about dressing up, even if you don’t normally go all out. It’s all part of making the night feel truly special.
If you’re looking to add a touch of elegance to your Vienna Christmas trip, an evening at the State Opera is a must.
INDULGE IN FESTIVE VIENNESE TREATS
The holidays are the perfect excuse to eat your way through Vienna! There’s so many incredible foods and different treats you can enjoy. Here are a few things I think you should really try:
Glühwein: This is a hot mulled wine that is perfect for warming up on a cold winter day.
Käsespätzle: This is a traditional Austrian dish made of noodles and cheese. It’s similar to mac and cheese but with a unique twist.
Lebkuchen: These are traditional spiced gingerbread cookies that can be found in all shapes and sizes at the markets. Perfect for snacking while you explore!
Kaiserschmarrn: Fluffy shredded pancake served with various toppings like fruit compote, nuts, and powdered sugar.
Maroni: Chestnuts roasted on an open fire – a classic Christmas treat!
Langos: This Hungarian street food has become popular in Vienna as well. It’s basically fried dough topped with various delicious toppings.
Kartoffelknödel mit Sauerkraut: This is a hearty dish of potato dumplings served with sauerkraut and sometimes also meat.
Raclette: This is a must-try for cheese lovers! It’s melted cheese on top of a slice of bread, sometimes with added toppings like ham or bacon.
Germknödel: This is a fluffy yeast dumpling filled with plum jam and topped with poppy seeds. It’s a popular dessert at the Christmas markets.
DISCOVER THE ART OF VIENNESE CHRISTMAS DECORATIONS
Vienna’s Christmas decorations are something special. From the second you step into one of the city’s charming holiday markets, you’re surrounded by twinkling lights, festive scents, and stalls filled with handmade treasures.
If you’re looking to bring a piece of this magic home, these decorations make perfect souvenirs and thoughtful gifts for friends and family (or, let’s be real—for yourself!).
The markets are packed with hand-blown glass ornaments in every colour you can imagine. Some have intricate designs, while others are simple and elegant, perfect for adding a touch of old-world charm to your holiday decor. There are also beautiful wooden figures - think nutcrackers, angels, and other classic Christmas characters - that are carved and painted by local artisans.
Last year, I couldn’t resist buying a hand-carved Santa from a stall at the Spittelberg market. He’s got this cozy little smile and is wearing a traditional red coat with all these tiny painted details. He’s now one of my favourite holiday decorations, and every time I pull him out, it reminds me of that trip to Vienna.
EXPLORE THE CHRISTMAS VILLAGE ON MARIA-THERESIEN-PLATZ
If you’re looking for a charming and slightly quieter spot to soak up the Christmas spirit, the Christmas Village on Maria-Theresien-Platz is a hidden gem. Nestled between the stunning Natural History Museum and the Museum of Art, this cozy little market feels like a peaceful escape from the larger, more bustling markets around Vienna. I absolutely loved wandering through the charming wooden stalls whilst sipping a warm Punsch.
You can browse the stalls for unique handmade crafts, like intricate wooden ornaments, wool scarves, and beautifully painted pottery. I found some lovely little trinkets that made perfect gifts - things you maybe won’t find at the larger markets.
Whether you’re a fan of unique crafts or just looking for a spot to relax and enjoy the festive atmosphere, the Christmas Village on Maria-Theresien-Platz is a must-visit. It’s a little off the beaten path, but that’s part of the charm - it’s a peaceful place where you can fully appreciate the holiday season’s coziness and beauty.
WATCH THE VIENNA PHILHARMONIC ORCHESTRA’S ADVENT CONCERT
If you’re a music lover, then catching the Vienna Philharmonic’s Advent concert is an absolute must while visiting Vienna at Christmas. This orchestra is world-famous for a reason, and hearing them perform in Vienna - especially during the festive season - is nothing short of magical.
The best part of the concert is how it really captures the spirit of the season. They often include pieces that feel festive yet timeless, which gives you a sense of nostalgia and joy that’s perfect for the holidays.
If you’re lucky, they might play a few well-loved carols or traditional Austrian pieces that bring a special touch of Viennese culture to the evening.
Tickets for this concert can sell out quickly, especially around Christmas, so it’s best to book well in advance if you can. Book on the official website.
EXPERIENCE CHRISTMAS IN VIENNA’S COFFEE HOUSES
Viennese coffee houses are a world unto themselves - a timeless escape where you can slow down, relax, and watch the world go by. Stepping into one can be magical, where the elegance of old-world charm meets the warmth of holiday cheer.
During the Christmas season, these coffee houses are even more magical than usual, decked out with twinkling lights and holiday decorations that make them feel extra cozy and inviting.
One of my favourite things to do is order a slice of Sachertorte (more on that later) and a steaming holiday coffee or a Wiener Melange (Vienna’s classic coffee blend that’s similar to a cappuccino). It’s pure indulgence and I’m not even a huge coffee fan but there’s something about being in Vienna that makes it the perfect experiece. The flavors are rich and warming, the perfect complement to a chilly winter’s day in the city.
Around the holidays, many places offer seasonal treats too - like Christmas cookies and spiced cakes - which make the experience feel even more festive.
Whether you’re visiting Café Central, Café Landtmann, or a smaller, tucked-away spot, these coffee houses are the perfect refuge from the winter cold and the bustling holiday markets.
There’s no better way to immerse yourself in Vienna’s holiday spirit than sitting back, enjoying a rich dessert, and simply soaking in the cozy atmosphere of a true Viennese coffee house.
ATTEND THE CHRISTMAS VILLAGE IN THE UNIVERSITY CAMPUS
If you’re looking for a Christmas market in Vienna with a bit more of a young, lively vibe, then the University campus market is your go-to spot!
Unlike some of the bigger, more famous markets around the city, this one feels refreshingly local, thanks to its relaxed, slightly bohemian atmosphere.
Since it’s on the university campus, you’ll see tons of students mingling, grabbing drinks, and checking out the stalls, which really adds to the fun, casual energy of the place.
One of the best things about this market is the unique selection of art and quirky gifts you can find here. The stalls are filled with handcrafted jewellry, abstract art pieces, and playful souvenirs that you’re unlikely to find at the other, more traditional Christmas markets.
One thing I love about this market is that there’s live music! The market often has small local bands and performers playing everything from indie tunes to jazz, giving it a bit of a festival feel.
You can grab a mulled wine or a Glühwein, cozy up with friends, and just enjoy the music while you soak in the festive vibes.
So if you’re after a Christmas market that feels a bit more off-the-beaten-path and less touristy, head to the University campus.
DISCOVER SCHONBRUNN PALACE IN ITS HOLIDAY SPLENDOR
Schönbrunn Palace is breathtaking no matter when you visit, but come Christmas time, it’s like stepping into a winter fairytale.
This historic palace, with its grand architecture and beautiful gardens, becomes even more magical when it’s all decorated for Christmas. Right in front of the palace, is one of Vienna’s most enchanting holiday markets, set against the stunning backdrop of this former imperial residence. - The combination of history, holiday spirit, and festive lights makes it an absolute must-see.
A visit here is best enjoyed slowly. Start by touring the palace itself, where you can explore the opulent rooms once home to the Habsburgs. It’s especially cozy around Christmas, as they decorate certain rooms with festive touches that make it feel like you’re stepping back into a grand holiday celebration of the past. Once you’ve soaked in the palace’s history and elegance, head outside to the market, where the real holiday magic awaits!
The market at Schönbrunn is filled with stalls offering a mix of high-quality artisanal goods, handmade decorations, and seasonal treats. It’s perfect for finding unique, handcrafted gifts or just picking up a special ornament or two. I always make a beeline for the gingerbread stands here - they sell the most amazing, perfectly spiced gingerbread that smells just as good as it tastes. They’re decorated so beautifully, too, that I almost feel bad eating them (almost!).
Don’t forget to grab a warm mug of mulled wine or Punsch as you wander through the stalls. I have to admit on my last visit here I had 1 too many Punschs and felt pretty drunk! I didn’t realise how strong they were! That’s my excuse anyway.
The lights, music, and scents of gingerbread and roasting chestnuts make it easy to lose yourself in the festive atmosphere. Schönbrunn Palace is a must-do when visiting Vienna at Christmas.
ENJOY VIENNA’S WINTER FLEA MARKETS
If you’re after a holiday shopping experience with a bit of character and charm, Vienna’s winter flea markets are where it’s at! These markets are a treasure trove of unique finds and one-of-a-kind gifts that you definitely won’t find in any department store.
Whether you’re hunting for a quirky stocking stuffer, a vintage trinket with history, or some handmade jewellry, Vienna’s flea markets have got you covered.
The magic of these markets is in the unexpected. You never quite know what you’re going to stumble upon, which makes every visit feel like a mini adventure.
I’d recommend you go early if you can! The best finds tend to go quickly, especially during the holiday season when everyone’s on the hunt for that perfect gift. Also, bundle up - the markets are often outdoors, and it can get chilly.
VISIT THE HOFBURG PALACE’S CHRISTMAS MARKET
If you want a Christmas experience with a royal twist, the Christmas market at Hofburg Palace is the perfect spot. This market is right in the centre of Vienna’s former imperial palace and visiting it feels like stepping into a holiday celebration from centuries past, complete with grand architecture and a sense of old-world charm.
Just strolling through the grounds surrounded by the palace’s impressive facades makes it easy to imagine what Christmas might have looked like here in the days of emperors and empresses.
The vibe here is a bit quieter and more refined than some of the city’s other markets, making it a wonderful place to relax and take in the beauty around you. And the market vendors are always so friendly and knowledgeable; they’re happy to chat about their handmade wares, whether it’s hand-carved wooden figures, intricate glass ornaments, or cozy knit scarves.
If you go at dusk, when the market lights twinkle against the palace walls, it feels especially magical. The combination of the festive market and the palace’s grand architecture is breathtaking, like a scene from a classic holiday movie.
TRY THE SACHER TORTE AT THE FAMOUS CAFE SACHER
Vienna is famous for its delicious desserts, and one of the must-tries is the Sacher Torte. This rich chocolate cake with apricot jam filling was invented over 180 years ago by Franz Sacher and it’s one of my favorite desserts of all time!
Today, you can find many places in Vienna that claim to have the best Sacher Torte but I recommend heading to Cafe Sacher. This historic cafe is located inside Hotel Sacher and the interior is just simply spectacular! The entrance of the hotel is also beautifully decorated for Christmas with two giant nutcrackers standing guard.
I’d recommend booking in advance if you can as if you don’t you’ll probably have to wait in line to get a table if you turn up without a reservation, but it’s definitely worth it. You can also order a cup of hot chocolate or coffee to go with your cake – perfect for warming up on a cold winter day!
SEE THE CHRISTMAS TREE IN RATHAUSPLATZ
The massive Christmas tree at Rathausplatz is truly an incredible sight! Standing tall and beautifully decorated, this tree is a holiday icon in Vienna and one of the city’s most impressive seasonal attractions.
The tree is right in front of the magnificent Rathaus (Vienna’s City Hall) and it’s enormous, perfectly adorned with lights and ornaments, and if you time it right, you might even catch the official lighting ceremony.
I’d recommend grabbing a warm drink (a spiced Punsch is my go-to) and finding a cozy spot where you can take in the view. The tree is at the heart of the bustling Rathausplatz Christmas market, so you’ll be surrounded by festive stalls, the aroma of roasted chestnuts, and the sounds of cheerful holiday music.
If you’re anything like me, you’ll probably end up taking about a million photos of it from every angle. The whole setup - the glowing lights, the festive decorations, and the grand architecture of the Rathaus in the background - makes for some truly picture-perfect holiday snapshots.
SNAP A PHOTO WITH THE GIANT BOW AT POPP & KRETSCHMER
When it comes to amazing holiday decorations in Vienna, the massive red bow in front of Popp & Kretschmer is a must-see! This high-end Austrian fashion boutique really goes all out with its festive decor every year, turning the whole storefront into a gift-wrapped masterpiece.
The enormous red bow, draped elegantly across the building, has become an iconic symbol of Christmas in Vienna, drawing locals and tourists alike to stop, stare, and, of course, snap a photo or two.
Every year, the bow seems to get bigger and brighter, making it one of the most popular photo spots in the city.
If you’re in the mood for a little splurge or want to window shop, Popp & Kretschmer is the perfect place to indulge. This boutique has been around for over a century and is known for its high-quality Austrian and international fashion. Even if luxury shopping isn’t on your to-do list, it’s fun to wander through the beautifully decorated storefronts and check out the latest styles.
ENJOY THE CHRISTMAS MARKET AT STEPHANSPLATZ
Stephansplatz is one of Vienna’s newer Christmas market gems. It’s a bit smaller, with around 40 stalls, but it more than makes up for its size with a cozy, traditional atmosphere that feels straight out of a holiday fairytale.
What makes this market truly special is its location - it’s set right in front of the breathtaking St. Stephen’s Cathedral. Picture enjoying your snacks and warm mulled wine while gazing up at the cathedral’s stunning Gothic architecture. It adds a whole other level of charm to the experience, making it feel like you’ve stepped back in time.
If you’re a chocolate lover, make sure to try the handcrafted chocolates from the market stalls - they’re delicious and make for a perfect holiday treat!
And while you’re in Stephansplatz, don’t miss the chance to get a bird’s-eye view of Vienna by climbing to the top of St. Stephen’s Cathedral.
You have two options here: you can take on the 343 steps of the South Tower for a great workout and an unbeatable view, or opt for the North Tower lift for an equally stunning but less strenuous ascent. Personally, I couldn’t decide which view I loved more - each offers a unique perspective, so if you have the time, I’d definitely recommend doing both!
TIPS FOR VISITING VIENNA AT CHRISTMAS
🇦🇹
Bundle up and don’t forget a warm jacket - Vienna gets seriously chilly in December! Temperatures hover between 5°C (41°F) and 0°C (32°F). Gloves and a hat will be lifesavers, but if you happen to leave them behind, don’t worry - you can easily find winter accessories at the Christmas markets or local shops.
Booking your hotel in advance is key during this busy season. With the Christmas markets in full swing, accommodations fill up fast, and prices go up as demand spikes. If you need tips on where to stay, check out my guide to the best places to stay in Vienna.
To avoid the big crowds at Christmas markets, try visiting earlier in the day or on weekdays. These are typically quieter times, making it easier to take in the festive atmosphere without the hustle and bustle.
Keep cash on hand, too! Many market stalls don’t accept card payments, so it’s handy to have euros ready for shopping and snacks.
For getting around, the U-Bahn is your best friend. Vienna’s metro system is efficient and connects you to all the main attractions on this list, saving you time and energy.
If you have your heart set on dining at a popular restaurant or café, be sure to reserve a table ahead of time. December is a peak season with tourists everywhere, and spots at popular places get booked up quickly.
Many places are closed on Sundays, even during December, so keep this in mind as you plan out your days.
