VIENNA : THE IMPERIAL GEM

🗺

I can’t mention the top places to visit in Austria without talking about it’s capital, Vienna.

Every cobblestone you walk on, every building you pass, and every corner you turn has a story to tell in Vienna. There is history all around and it’s a fascinating place to explore. Whether you are in Vienna for a long weekend or a longer holiday there’s so much to see and do in Vienna.

The architcture is a visual feast in the capital of Austria. The Baroque facades are so intricate that you'll find yourself stopping every few steps to admire the details. The Gothic spires seem to touch the sky, reminding you that Vienna's history is as tall as its most imposing buildings.

You can take a sightseeing hop-on hop-off bus tour of Vienna if you’d like to see all the main sights.

When you’re in Austria you can’t miss out on visiting Schönbrunn Palace. This place is an exquisite masterpiece of Rococo art. It was once the imperial residence and stands as a testament to the grandeur of Austria’s past.

We were in Austria for the Christmas Markets one year and there is an amazing market at the Schönbrunn Palace. The setting is simply stunning and I got a little tipsy of one too many Orangenpunsch!

The magnificent Gothic building of St Stephen’s Cathedral dominates the Vienna skyline. You can ascend its spires for amazing panoramic views over Vienna.

Whilst in Vienna you should head to the State Opera House to see a concert at one of Vienna’s finest concert halls where you can listen to magical works by Mozart and Strauss.

A trip to Vienna would not be complete without tasting some culinary delights and my favourite is the legendary Sachertorte. This is a decadent chocolate cake with an apricot jam filling. To buy the original head to Hotel Sacher where you can grab a slice to take away or eat in the little cafe.

If you’re visiting Vienna you can see the top 65 things to do in Vienna so you can plan your trip.

SALZBURG: MOZART’S HOMETOWN

Salzburg is the birthplace of Mozart and when you’re there you simply have to pay a visit to Mozart's birthplace and residence. It's like stepping into a time machine that whisks you back to the days of this musical genius.

You can walk through the rooms where the famous music was written and trust me you'll find yourself humming a Mozart tune, whether you planned to or not.

But Salzburg is more than just the music of Mozart.

You should meander through the UNESCO-listed Old Town, where the streets are like something out of a fairytale. The Baroque architecture that lines the lanes is so well-preserved.

Any one a ‘The Sound of Music’ fan? Well, Salzburg doubles as your personal movie set! The Sound of Music Tour takes you on a journey to the movie's iconic locations.

Yes, you can actually walk in the footsteps of the von Trapp family and twirl your way through the same breathtaking landscapes that made the film so beloved.

There is one more essential stop on your Salzburg adventure – Festung Hohensalzburg. This isn't just any old castle, it's one of Europe's largest preserved castles.

Head to the top of the castle and you will be treated to some jaw dropping, panoramic views over the city and the stunning Alps that wrap around Salzburg.

So, whether you're a music aficionado, a history buff, a movie lover, or just someone seeking a charming adventure, Salzburg is ready to sweep you off your feet.
