SINGAPORE TRAVEL GUIDE
Singapore is an island country in Southeast Asia. The country's islands are located between Malaysia and Indonesia.
On the map below you can spot where Singapore is located in south eastern Asia. The country lies 137km / 85 miles north of the equator.
Singapore is a city state which is connected via a bridge and a freeway to the mainland of Malaysia.
However, Singapore is not only one island! 63 islands belong to the city state and are dotted around the Singapore coastline, most of these islands are inhabited.
Singapore comes from the Sanskrit name 'Singapura' which means 'lion city'. The Merlion, the country's national symbol, has been inspired by the city's name.
SINGAPORE GENERAL INFO
Singapore is an island country in Southwast Asia. The country's islands are located between Malaysia and Indonesia.
Singapore was founded as a British colony by Sir Stamford Raffles in 1819. During World War II, from 1942 - 1945, Singapore was occupied by Japan. It became independent in 1965. Much of the country is built on sand on reclaimed land. The sand is imported mainly from Malaysia, Vietnam and Cambodia.
On the Singapore flag the red stands for brotherhood and equality, the white for purity and virtue, while the crescent moon stands for the young nation on the rise and the five stars are the ideals which are followed: democracy, peace, progress, justice and equality.

WHERE TO STAY IN SINGAPORE
Arab Street (Kampong Glam)
The area surrounding Arab Street, known as Kampong Glam, is a very hip area in Singapore. Its lanes are packed with boutiques and modern cafés, the district is also home to the Sultan Mosque.
China Town
A colourful, beautiful district in Singapore.
Marina Bay
Personally, I don’t think there’s much character in Marina Bay but it is the place to stay if you want 4 and 5 star luxury accommodation. It’s hard not to be awed by Marina Bay though. The project has transformed downtown Singapore’s seafront over the past 60 years or so.
EATING IN SINGAPORE
The Singaporean staple diet does not include dairy based dishes, but you will find many dishes including coconut or rice milk products and lots of rice and rice noodles.
There are many food courts or food centres all over the city called hawker centres - the most famous one in Singapore is called Lau Pa Sat. At the hawkers you can come to eat breakfast, lunch or dinner or just visit for a snack during the day.
Here are my top choices of food to try when in Singapore.
Satay
This is grilled chicken or beef cubes on a stick served with peanut sauce available at many street stalls and hawker centres
Ice Kejang
This is a simple yet delicious dish of ice with red bean dessert.
Roti Prata
This is fried flatbread served with vegetable or meet curries
Kaya Toast
This is a hugely popular snack or breakfast. Toast with coconut egg jam and sweet sugary topping.
