Where is Manchester?

🗺

Manchester is a city located in the northwest of England, United Kingdom.

It's a major urban centre and the principal city in the metropolitan county of Greater Manchester.

It is about 30 miles east of Liverpool and 30 miles west of the Pennines mountain range. I grew up pretty much slap bang in the middle of the two cities so know both Manchester and Liverpool very well.

Getting to Manchester is easy as there are great transport links from around the rest of the UK and a direct train from London Euston goes to Manchester Piccadilly. I recommend booking your train journey with Trainline

Why is Manchester a great travel destination?

🗺

Manchester is a fantastic travel destination for so many reasons, offering a diverse range of experiences that cater to various interests.

Manchester has a rich industrial heritage as it played a pivotal role during the Industrial Revolution and remnants of its industrial past are visible throughout the city. Museums like the Museum of Science and Industry provide insights into the city's manufacturing and technological advancements.

The city boasts a vibrant cultural scene, with numerous art galleries, theaters, and music venues. From the iconic Manchester Art Gallery to live performances at the Royal Exchange Theatre.

Manchester is a shopaholic's paradise. From high-end brands in Spinningfields to quirky finds in the Northern Quarter, the city offers diverse shopping experiences. The Trafford Centre, one of the largest shopping centers in Europe, is a must-visit for retail therapy.

For sports enthusiasts, Manchester is synonymous with football. Home to two of the world's most renowned football clubs, Manchester United and Manchester City, the city is a pilgrimage site for football fans. A visit to Old Trafford or the Etihad Stadium is a must.

In this guide I have selected the very best things to do in Manchester. The list features the most famous landmarks and the best tourist attractions in Manchester that are worth your time. The attractions are put in order of which ones I think are worth visiting the most so depending on how much time you have you can simply start at the top and work down so pick and choose which ones interest you the most.

Let’s check out the 11 best things to do in Manchester.

What are the best things to do in Manchester?

🗺

1) Manchester Museum

Manchester Museum is on the same scale as the British Museum in London. Within its permanent exhibits you can discover a treasure trove of over 4.5 million artifacts, from awe-inspiring dinosaur skeletons to the mystique of ancient Egyptian mummies. The museum even has a vivarium, where researchers breed highly endangered frog species.

If you need a breather between galleries you can head to the on-site café.

The Manchester Museum is free to enter so it’s great if you’re visiting Manchester on a budget.

Manchester Museum is open daily from 10am to 5pm and you can get more information on the official website.

2) Salford Quays

Salford Quays is an iconic waterfront destination on the banks of the historic Manchester Ship Canal. It was once an industrial powerhouse, but was abandoned for many years. It has now been turned in to a hub of media and culture. This waterfront region just west of Manchester City Centre is home to some of the UK’s biggest TV media organisations, The Lowry theatre and gallery, The Quays Shopping Centre, and the award winning Imperial War Museum North, as well as other attractions.

Salford Quays is home to the BBC and Coronation Street is filmed here (more on that later). Other shows filmed at MediaCity in Salford Quays are The Voice and Countdown.

The buildings are mainly made of glass which makes it a beautiful place to watch the sunset as the light reflects off the buildings making a stunning view.

There’s a great waterfront food destination with many bars and restaurants which makes it the perfect place to visit in the evenings.

For more information about Salford Quays visit the official website.

3) Trafford Centre

The Trafford Centre is slightly outside of Manchester City Centre and is a huge shopping mall so if you fancy a bit of shopping whilst in Manchester this is the place to go. It is one of most popular and largest indoor malls in the UK. The building itself is fascinating. I remember the Trafford Centre being built when I was around 16 and I used to go all the time - I loved it!

There are so many different shops at the Trafford Centre - The Peel Avenue section is home to high street brands like River Island, Marks and Spencer and Next and in Regent Crescent, you’ll find fashion brands like Gap, Mango and French Connection. In the centre is a huge Selfridges store.

It’s not just shopping that you can do at Trafford Centre. There’s Sea Life Centre aquarium. Other leisure facilities, a mini-golf course, bowling alleys and a 20-screen cinema.

If you’re feeling a little peckish you can visit the food court which is one of Europe’s biggest. It has many restaurants and fast food eateries including Nandos, Las Iguanas, Wagamamas, Pizza Express and many many more. The food court is set up to look like you’re aboard a cruise ship and it’s a pretty cool dining experience.

The Trafford Centre is open Monday – Friday from 10 am to 10 pm, Saturday from 10 am to 9 pm and Sunday from 12 noon to 6 pm

Find out more about the Trafford Centre on their website.

4) Old Trafford

Manchester United is one of the best-known football clubs in the world and it is, incidently, my football team. In my youth I spent many a Saturday afternoon excitedly strolling down Sir Matt Busby Way with my Dad on my way to watch United play at ‘The Theatre of Dreams.’

Manchester United’s Old Trafford is one of the largest stadiums in the UK and on a Saturday afternoon (or any other match day) the atmosphere around the stadium is electric.

If you can you should try and get tickets to a match, especially if you’re visiting from abroad. You do have to create an account at ManUtd.com to purchase tickets and I’d recommend buying at least 3 months in advance. Purchase tickets here.

If you’re not around on Saturday you can check out the museum and stadium tour, which includes a look at the club’s extensive collection of trophies.

If you don’t fancy Manchester United’s stadium you can always go to the other football teams stadium, Manchester City’s Eithad Stadium. You can also take a tour of the Eithad Stadium.

5) China Town

Manchester's Chinatown is vibrant and culturally rich nestled in the heart of the city, offering a unique blend of Chinese traditions and modern urban life. Established in the late 20th century, it has evolved into one of the largest Chinatowns in Europe.

As you wander through its bustling street you will see ornate red and gold arches, symbolising prosperity and good fortune in Chinese culture. The narrow lanes are filled with traditional lanterns and the aroma of authentic Chinese cuisine wafts through the air. Good luck trying to resist going into one of the many restaurants for some delicious Chinese food. My favourite eateries in the area are Red Chilli for excellent Szechuan food and Ho’s Bakery for authentic Chinese buns.

The focal point of Manchester's Chinatown is the iconic Imperial Arch, a grand entrance that welcomes visitors with intricate dragon motifs and beautiful craftsmanship. There are many celebrations held in the area during Chinese New Year and other significant festivals. If you’re in Manchester around Chinese New Year I recommend going to Chinatown to see the magical celebrations including singing, dancing and dragons wandering the streets.

6) Science and Industry Museum

Manchester's Science and Industry Museum is a captivating journey through the city's industrial heritage and scientific advancements. It is housed in the historic former Liverpool Road Railway Station and showcases Manchester's pivotal role in the Industrial Revolution and its profound impact on the world.

There are exhibits highlighting aircraft and locomotives as well as an exhibit showcasing Manchester's history with computing technology and how it affected communications across distances.

The Revolution Manchester Gallery delves into the city's rich history, featuring iconic objects like the first stored-program computer, the Manchester Baby. The museum also highlights the significance of Manchester's textile industry with interactive displays and demonstrations.

For enthusiasts of aviation and space exploration, the Air and Space Hall offers an amazing display of historic aircraft and artifacts. The museum regularly hosts different events, workshops and live demonstrations, providing hands-on experiences for visitors of all ages.

Visit the Science and Industry Museum website for more information on what’s on.

7) Heaton Park

Heaton Park is one of the biggest city parks in the UK, spanning more than 600 acres. Heaton Park boasts a stunning landscape featuring woodlands, ornamental gardens, and a picturesque lake. The park's crowning jewel is Heaton Hall, an 18th-century neoclassical mansion surrounded by manicured lawns and flower beds, providing a glimpse into the grandeur of Manchester's past.

Heaton Park is perfect for outdoor enthusiasts. It has a network of walking and cycling paths, perfect for leisurely strolls or more active pursuits. The park's extensive grounds provide lots of space for picnics, sports and family gatherings.

The boating lake is the perfect place to enjoy a paddleboat ride or simply relax by the water's edge.

The park is open daily from 8am to dusk.

8) Heaton Hall

Heaton Hall is a Grade I-listed building right in the middle of Heaton Park. The main entrance to the hall faces north, with spectacular, uninterrupted views of the Pennines.

This neoclassical mansion, designed by James Wyatt in the late 18th century, exudes grandeur and sophistication. As the centerpiece of Heaton Park, the hall is surrounded by manicured lawns, ornamental gardens, and picturesque landscapes.

When you get inside, you'll be treated to an experience of how the 18th-century upper class lived. On a visit to Heaton Hall you can explore the interior including the regal rooms with period furnishings and decor. There are lion statues guarding the entrance, a library and a music room.

The biggest attraction is the Etruscan ‘Cupola Room’. Inspired by Ancient Roman architecture, this room has a dome-shaped ceiling, with mirrors lining the walls, and is only one of 3 examples of this type of room surviving in the UK.

9) The Hidden Gem, St Mary’s Catholic Church

The Hidden Gem is quite literally a hidden gem – a beautiful but little-known attraction in the heart of Manchester. The Hidden Gem is a pretty modest and unassuming red brick building on a quiet street. St Marys Catholic Church is the oldest catholic church in Manchester and inside you are in for a treat. The plain looking exterior hides what is truely stunning on the inside.

There are many wonderful marble sculptures, artworks and stained glass windows to marvel at. Look out for the critically acclaimed Stations of the Cross which is a series of 14 striking modern artworks by Norman Adams, on the left-hand wall as you enter.

The church is open daily 8am to 6pm. It is a working church and you can visit for mass everyday.

10) Coronation Street : The Tour

If you’re not from the UK I doubt you’ve heard of Coronation Street but it is true British instituation. It is a soap opera that first aired back in 1960 and since then has become a beloved part of British culture. Coronation Street is set and filmed in Manchester and a great thing to do in Manchester is to go on a Coronation Street tour.

The tour takes you around the nation’s favourite street. The tour offers a behind-the-scenes peek that lasts around 90 minutes at MediaCityUK.

You can explore the external sets and walk in the footsteps of beloved characters, discovering familiar landmarks like the Rovers Return, the Kabin, and Audrey's salon. The tour offers an insider's perspective on the show's production, with behind-the-scenes insights into the filming process and set design.

Coronation Street: The Tour is a must-visit for avid ‘Corrie’ fans. It's a unique opportunity to connect with the rich storytelling and characters that have become a beloved part of British television for decades. You’ll love hearing the bits of info about what goes on behind the scenes, and who knows, if you’re really lucky, you might see one of the cast floating about.

11) Curry Mile

Curry Mile in Manchester is a culinary haven celebrated for its eclectic array of South Asian cuisine. This iconic quarter-mile stretch in the Rusholme neighbourhood has earned its nickname due to the plethora of Indian, Pakistani, and Bangladeshi restaurants that line the street.

Indian cuisine is very popular in Manchester, with the rice ‘n’ 3 (rice with 3 different curries) being a popular dinner option for locals.

Curry Mile comes alive at night time with the aromas of sizzling kebabs, rich curries, and freshly baked naan bread. Be sure to check out Mughli, MyLahore and Punjab Tandoori for the best dining experiences.

Curry Mile is not just a dining destination; it's a cultural melting pot where students, families, and food enthusiasts gather. The street also has grocery stores, spice shops, and vibrant markets you can visit.
