Castel Sant’Elmo
🇮🇹
This is top of my list to do in Naples. It is an incredible medieval fortress on Volmero Hill with the best views over the whole of Naples, Naples Bay, Vesuvius and all the way to Sorrento. There’s a funicular to make your way up the hill to save your legs. Simply get on at Montesanto station, off at Morghen stop and walk the short 5 minutes over to the castle entrance.
The castle dates back to the second half of the 13th century. An explosion in 1587 destroyed much of the castle. The reconstruction was done by architect Domenico Fontana.
It has become more famous for it’s role in the Revolution of 1799. A group of people seized the fortress and proclaimed the Neopolitan Republic. This, then inspired the French Revolution in the same year.
In the 19th century the fortress serves as a prision by the Bourbons and then the National Guard.
It’s an interesting walk through the long tunnels of the fortress before reaching the top and there’s some pretty steep slopes. When you emerge from the darkness of the tunnels to the top the views are simply incredible. You can walk the walls around the outside and take in the 360 views all around. It’s stunning.
There’s little to no shade up there so bear that in mind when planning the time of day you go.
Opening Times : 8:30am - 7:30pm Last entry 6:30pm
Cost : 5 euro
Where is Castel Sant’Elmo in Naples?
Eat pizza
🇮🇹
I love pizza! Who doesn’t? Honestly, if you don’t, I’m not sure we can be friends! Naples is the home to the Neopolitan pizza and OMG is it delicious. I could live off them. Whilst you’re in Naples you simply have to stop for a pizza.
Where’s the best place to go for pizzas in Naples?
Best for big pizzas : Antica Pizzeria del Borgo Orefici
This pizzeria is down a little side street, close to Naples port. There are only has a few tables and a lovely outdoor terrace for you to enjoy your enormous pizza.
If you’re feeling inspired you can take a pizza making class whilst you’re in Naples.
Best for a traditional pizza : Da Michele
For the most traditional pizzeria in Naples, head to Da Michele in the Forcella district. It’s pretty popular so be prepared to wait a while. Da Michele only serves traditional Marinara or Marherita pizza.
Home of the pizza sandwich : Da Ettore
This good value and lively pizzeria is known for its pagnotielli (pizza sandwiches). They’re worth a try if you’re after something a little different than a traditional pizza.
Probably the best pizzeria in the city : Sorbillo
If you don't mind waiting then legendary Sorbillo is unmissable. It’s a family pizzeria opened in 1935. It's always busy and the atmosphere is fantasic. The pizzas are great and known for their local ingredients.

Castell dell’Ovo
🇮🇹
This castle used to be on a small island in Naples Bay but is now connected to the mainland by a footbridge. Castel dell’Ovo is translated roughly to Egg Castle and legend has it there is a magic egg buried in a secret location within the castle that has protective powers.
Castel Nuovo
🇮🇹
Another castle! There’s a few of them in Naples. This castle is close to the habour and is one of the first sights people will see of Naples if they come on a cruise ship which lots of people do. Whilst we were there The Queen Elizabeth and the Wonder of the Seas (the largest cruise ship in the world) were there.
Castel Nuovo was built in 1282 and has 5 circular crenulated towers. It’s main entrance is an intricately carved white marble triumphal arch between two watchtowers. You can take a tour of the castle and inside you can visit Palatine Chapel to see beautiful historical frescoes and the Armoury Hall to see Roman ruins under a glass floor.
Opening Times : Monday to Saturday: 8:30 am to 6 pm. Sunday: 10 am to 1 pm.
Cost : 6 euro
Transport : Metro Line 1. Bus Line 151
Piazza del Plebiscito
🇮🇹
Piazza del Plebiscito is the main square in Naples and features the Royal Palace and the Basilica Royal. It’s a big regret of mine that I didn’t head over there - I didn’t realise quite how close I was to it and completely missed it! It is a huge open space which is framed by the semi-circular colonnades of the Basilica Royal.
