PHOTOS AND POSTCARDS FROM TANK FEST
The Tank Museum in Bovington was never on my list of places I wanted to visit but when you have a son who loves all things tanks it’s was inevitable that I’d end up going at least once.
We’ve been a few times over the years but this year was the first time we attended TANKFEST.
TANKFEST is the world’s best and biggest display of historic moving armour that takes place over three explosive days every June.
There are three full days of arena action, with explosive displays of unique historic and modern armour running throughout the weekend. You can see the stars of the Tank Museum’s collection running alongside guest tanks and vehicles from the British Army in exciting displays.
There’s also an opportunity to hear lectures from tank experts, explore Living History encampments and see the world’s best collection of tanks inside The Tank Museum.
We organised ourselves like complete pros the night before as we didn’t want to miss out on anthing we wanted to see. I’m saying ‘we’ but the reality was it was my son who wanted to see things and I was just dragged along for the ride.
There were two main areas with timed events - the Kuwait Display Arena and the Live Talks. We figured out where we needed to be at what times to be able to see the displays and the the talks we wanted. We managed to see everything we wanted over the 3 days plus have lots of time to explore the rest of TANKFEST and take a trip inside the museum itself.
It was an amazing weekend jam packed with action and I have to admit, I came away from it having been quite enthralled by the history of tanks and their role in different wars.
Where to Stay near Bovington
If you’re going to TankFest you’ll need somewhere to stay for a few nights and the area around Bovington is beautiful and is home to some of the prettiest villages in England. If you are wanting overnight accomodation I recommend you book as early as possible as the hotels around Bovington are very popular particularly during TankFest weekend.
Lulworth is a beautiful coastal area you could stay in. The Lulworth Cove Inn is a wonderful wonderful hotel that you could have as your base for a few days.
